Poets Against Walls invites poets and friends to join them in participating in a fast chain organized by La Union Del Pueblo Entero (LUPE), Texas Civil Rights Project, and Neta. Our group is joining the fast for 24 hours starting on Tuesday, July 3rd at 12noon in honor of the 2400+ children separated from their parents. The fast chain #BreakBreadNotFamilies has already been in effect for one week. *You can fast from anywhere in the country,* or if you live in the Rio Grande Valley, please join us poets if you can at Archer Park in McAllen at noon-1pm 7/3.
Last weekend, Dolores Huerta and Kerry Kennedy visited the Texas borderlands to start the 24-day fast and prayer chain. Every day since then, others have joined the fast by gathering at Archer Park at noon or fasting from afar, wherever they live, by signing up on the official #BreakBreadNotFamilies link https://m.signupgenius.com/....
Since we poets live here in the borderlands where many families have been separated, we feel it is important to reach out to our extended poetry and writing communities and familia here and throughout the country in an effort to unite poets and friends in this way with the efforts of local organizations such as the sponsors of this fast, to help lend our voices to the urgency of reuniting children with their families, stopping deportations, ending family detention, and finding the missing children.
Please consider signing up to fast with us poets on July 3rd through the following official #BreakBreadNotFamilies link, though you can sign up to fast on any day during this 24-day period ending July 17th: https://m.signupgenius.com/...
If you'd like to help but can't fast, please consider spending at least 20 minutes on Tuesday, 7/3 in mediation or writing for this cause, and/or please consider making a small monetary donation--perhaps the amount you spend on food for a day--in the link below for the local organizations engaged in critical work here in the borderlands... 100% of proceeds will go to: LUPE, the Texas Civil Rights Project, and Neta: https://www.breakbreadnotfamilies.org.

Here is the official event information from the #BreakBreadNotFamilies site:
"La Union del Pueblo Entero (LUPE), Texas Civil Rights Project (TCRP) and Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights will protest these wrongful actions that hurt the immigrant community of the Rio Grande Valley through a 24-hour hunger strike and prayer chain that will last 24 days, in honor of the more than 2,400 children separated from their parents.
Fasting as a means of nonviolent protest is a historic tool utilized by Cesar Chavez, the founder of La Union del Pueblo Entero, in resistance to the injustice faced by farm workers of Mexican descent. Cesar’s commitment to nonviolent protest, including his fasts, won the support and friendship of Robert F. Kennedy to the farm worker cause."
